The Undying: Pain, vulnerability, mortality, medicine, art, time, dreams, data, exhaustion, cancer, and care
As I said in my warning, above, this book is not meant for the newly diagnosed, nor is it meant for the woman (or man) currently going through cancer treatment. This is not a "how to survive" or "what to expect" book. It's a great book, but if what you are looking for is tips on how to get through chemo or what's the best thing for radiation burns, save this one for a few years from now, and keep looking. If, however, you're looking for a book that takes a few steps away from cancer and gazes back at it through an eye that is sometimes philosophical, sometimes literary, sometimes poetic, sometimes angry, sometimes political, and sometimes hilarious, this is the one.I'm six years out from my cancer diagnosis, have had plenty of time to adjust to the reality of my situation, and I loved the book--or at least most of it. There were some parts I sort of skimmed, and there will probably be some parts that you will skim, but they most likely won't be the same parts.Read it. Wait until you are ready, but once you are, read it.
